In a box of family's old letters, Marily Caton Quesnel found the following, previously unknown photo from the top of Half Dome, taken by Royal Quesnel in the fall of 1912. On the back side of the photo, he wrote a brief note to his future wife, Johanna Sagmeister:
(Detail) | (Note on the back side) |
"Taken on top of Half-Dome
I am standing on the left
next to the edge of cliff. Mr. A. [or M. A.?]
Walker climbed up here the
17th. of August, 1912, being the
first men since ten years past
who were successfful in making
top. We came up again Wednesday
the 21st. and again last
Sunday and took a few
pictures, I have the pleasure
of taking the first camera
upon the Dome and it is my
old stand-by, elevation at
this point 8852 ft. above
sea". [Royal O. Quesnel, 1912]
